Base

Road Base Limerock

Compactable base under asphalt, concrete, pavers and driveways.

Limerock is the base layer almost every hard surface in South Florida sits on. Crushed limestone with the fines left in, so it locks together and compacts to a hard, load-bearing surface rather than staying loose the way washed stone does.

Put it down before asphalt, before a concrete pour, before pavers, or use it on its own for a driveway that holds up to a truck. Compact it in lifts of no more than six inches and wet it as you go, because dry limerock will not bind.

  • Access roads and equipment pads
  • Grade raising where compaction matters

How much to order

Coverage per cubic yard.

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. How far that goes depends entirely on how deep you are laying it.

Depth1 cu yd coversYards per 500 sq ft
2 in162 sq ft3.1 cu yd
3 in108 sq ft4.6 cu yd
4 in81 sq ft6.2 cu yd
6 in54 sq ft9.3 cu yd
12 in27 sq ft18.6 cu yd

The arithmetic: length times width times depth, all in feet, divided by 27. A 40 by 20 ft area at 4 inches deep is 40 × 20 × 0.333 ÷ 27, which is about 9.9 cubic yards, so you order 10. Round up rather than down — coming up two yards short on a Friday costs a whole extra delivery.

Road Base Limerock — common questions

What people ask.

What is Road Base Limerock?

Limerock is the base layer almost every hard surface in South Florida sits on. Crushed limestone with the fines left in, so it locks together and compacts to a hard, load-bearing surface rather than staying loose the way washed stone does.

What is Road Base Limerock used for?

Compactable base under asphalt, concrete, pavers and driveways. Put it down before asphalt, before a concrete pour, before pavers, or use it on its own for a driveway that holds up to a truck. Compact it in lifts of no more than six inches and wet it as you go, because dry limerock will not bind.

How much Road Base Limerock do I need?

Multiply length by width by depth, all in feet, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, 81 sq ft at 4 inches or 54 sq ft at 6 inches. The calculator does it for you and converts to tons and truckloads.

Does Road Base Limerock need a compaction allowance?

Yes. Road Base Limerock is compacted in lifts, so it loses roughly a fifth of its loose volume once it is watered and rolled. Order 20 percent above your plan volume. Our calculator adds that automatically.

How much does Road Base Limerock cost delivered?

$31.25 per cubic yard, plus a flat $200 delivery per order across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade. Minimum order is one cubic yard.

What does Road Base Limerock weigh?

About 1.65 tons per cubic yard. A tri-axle carries roughly 18 cubic yards or 22 tons, whichever it reaches first, so a full load of Road Base Limerock is about 13.3 cubic yards.
