Recycled
Backfill, bedding and general fill. Budget alternative to virgin sand.
The fine fraction recovered from crushing old concrete. Performs close to virgin sand for backfill and bedding at a lower environmental cost, and it is what most commercial specs now allow where the sand is not exposed.
Not for anything decorative. Colour varies load to load and there will be the occasional fleck of aggregate. For everything buried, it does the job.

How much to order
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. How far that goes depends entirely on how deep you are laying it.
| Depth | 1 cu yd covers | Yards per 500 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| 2 in | 162 sq ft | 3.1 cu yd |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft | 4.6 cu yd |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft | 6.2 cu yd |
| 6 in | 54 sq ft | 9.3 cu yd |
| 12 in | 27 sq ft | 18.6 cu yd |
The arithmetic: length times width times depth, all in feet, divided by 27. A 40 by 20 ft area at 4 inches deep is 40 × 20 × 0.333 ÷ 27, which is about 9.9 cubic yards, so you order 10. Round up rather than down — coming up two yards short on a Friday costs a whole extra delivery.

Multiply length by width by depth, all in feet, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, 81 sq ft at 4 inches or 54 sq ft at 6 inches. The calculator does it for you and converts to tons and truckloads.
Yes. Recycled Concrete Sand is compacted in lifts, so it loses roughly a fifth of its loose volume once it is watered and rolled. Order 20 percent above your plan volume. Our calculator adds that automatically.

About 1.40 tons per cubic yard. A tri-axle carries roughly 18 cubic yards or 22 tons, whichever it reaches first, so a full load of Recycled Concrete Sand is about 15.7 cubic yards.
