Asphalt Millings

Driveways, parking, ranch roads and temporary access.

Old asphalt ground up and screened. Laid, compacted and left in the Florida sun, the residual bitumen softens and re-binds, so a millings driveway knits into a semi-solid surface over a season rather than staying loose like gravel.

Far cheaper than paving and much more durable than stone for a long drive. It is dark grey to black and will track slightly on hot days for the first few weeks.

How much to order

Coverage per cubic yard.

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. How far that goes depends entirely on how deep you are laying it.

Depth1 cu yd coversYards per 500 sq ft
2 in162 sq ft3.1 cu yd
3 in108 sq ft4.6 cu yd
4 in81 sq ft6.2 cu yd
6 in54 sq ft9.3 cu yd
12 in27 sq ft18.6 cu yd

The arithmetic: length times width times depth, all in feet, divided by 27. A 40 by 20 ft area at 4 inches deep is 40 × 20 × 0.333 ÷ 27, which is about 9.9 cubic yards, so you order 10. Round up rather than down — coming up two yards short on a Friday costs a whole extra delivery.

Asphalt Millings — common questions

What people ask.

What is Asphalt Millings?

Old asphalt ground up and screened. Laid, compacted and left in the Florida sun, the residual bitumen softens and re-binds, so a millings driveway knits into a semi-solid surface over a season rather than staying loose like gravel.

What is Asphalt Millings used for?

Driveways, parking, ranch roads and temporary access. Far cheaper than paving and much more durable than stone for a long drive. It is dark grey to black and will track slightly on hot days for the first few weeks.

How much Asphalt Millings do I need?

Multiply length by width by depth, all in feet, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, 81 sq ft at 4 inches or 54 sq ft at 6 inches. The calculator does it for you and converts to tons and truckloads.

Does Asphalt Millings need a compaction allowance?

Yes. Asphalt Millings is compacted in lifts, so it loses roughly a fifth of its loose volume once it is watered and rolled. Order 20 percent above your plan volume. Our calculator adds that automatically.

How much does Asphalt Millings cost delivered?

$22.25 per cubic yard, plus a flat $200 delivery per order across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade. Minimum order is one cubic yard.

What does Asphalt Millings weigh?

About 1.40 tons per cubic yard. A tri-axle carries roughly 18 cubic yards or 22 tons, whichever it reaches first, so a full load of Asphalt Millings is about 15.7 cubic yards.
