Sand

Paver Sand

Bedding and joint sand for interlocking pavers and brick.

Concrete screenings, the fine material left after crushing, washed and graded. It screeds flat, compacts under a plate, and locks pavers without setting hard the way mortar does, so individual units can still be lifted and reset.

Used both as the one-inch bedding course under pavers and swept into the joints afterwards. Do not substitute builders sand, which is too round, or the pavers will creep.

How much to order

Coverage per cubic yard.

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. How far that goes depends entirely on how deep you are laying it.

Depth1 cu yd coversYards per 500 sq ft
2 in162 sq ft3.1 cu yd
3 in108 sq ft4.6 cu yd
4 in81 sq ft6.2 cu yd
6 in54 sq ft9.3 cu yd
12 in27 sq ft18.6 cu yd

The arithmetic: length times width times depth, all in feet, divided by 27. A 40 by 20 ft area at 4 inches deep is 40 × 20 × 0.333 ÷ 27, which is about 9.9 cubic yards, so you order 10. Round up rather than down — coming up two yards short on a Friday costs a whole extra delivery.

Paver Sand — common questions

What people ask.

What is Paver Sand?

Concrete screenings, the fine material left after crushing, washed and graded. It screeds flat, compacts under a plate, and locks pavers without setting hard the way mortar does, so individual units can still be lifted and reset.

What is Paver Sand used for?

Bedding and joint sand for interlocking pavers and brick. Used both as the one-inch bedding course under pavers and swept into the joints afterwards. Do not substitute builders sand, which is too round, or the pavers will creep.

How much Paver Sand do I need?

Multiply length by width by depth, all in feet, and divide by 27 to get cubic yards. One cubic yard covers 162 sq ft at 2 inches, 108 sq ft at 3 inches, 81 sq ft at 4 inches or 54 sq ft at 6 inches. The calculator does it for you and converts to tons and truckloads.

Does Paver Sand need a compaction allowance?

Yes. Paver Sand is compacted in lifts, so it loses roughly a fifth of its loose volume once it is watered and rolled. Order 20 percent above your plan volume. Our calculator adds that automatically.

How much does Paver Sand cost delivered?

$31.25 per cubic yard, plus a flat $200 delivery per order across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade. Minimum order is one cubic yard.

What does Paver Sand weigh?

About 1.40 tons per cubic yard. A tri-axle carries roughly 18 cubic yards or 22 tons, whichever it reaches first, so a full load of Paver Sand is about 15.7 cubic yards.
